Polokwane - A Limpopo man accused of killing his girlfriend's two-year-old son in Seshego appeared briefly in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Kgabo Masiya, 32, was not asked to plead and the matter was postponed to June 11 to allow him to get legal representation.

He was arrested on Sunday, seven days after he allegedly cut the throat of his girlfriend's toddler with a broken bottle at her house.

Police said the man broke a window to gain access to the house and an argument ensued between him and his girlfriend, 27.

The woman's two-year-old son and her two siblings, aged 10 and 14, were there at the time.

“As the argument heated up, the woman managed to escape and went to her aunt's house to seek help, leaving her son and two siblings in the house,” police spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said at the time.

Masiya allegedly threw the toddler against the wall, slashed his throat with a broken bottle and stabbed the 14-year-old in the head when he tried to intervene.

The toddler died in the Polokwane Provincial Hospital on Tuesday. The teenager was treated at the same hospital and discharged.

Masiya is facing murder and attempted murder charges.

When he went to his girlfriend's house he was with a friend. Police were looking for his friend.

Masiya tried to hide his face from the packed public gallery when police officers brought him into the courtroom.
