Durabn - An Umlazi resident was to appear in court on Wednesday for lodging a false case of hijacking.

The man went to the Bhekithemba police station early on Tuesday to report the case. He apparently gave officers an elaborate account of the incident, but he will now do his talking in the dock after his fiance told police they had been relaxing together in the car when he wandered off to answer a call of nature and never returned.

He reportedly told police he had been driving his Chev Aveo car on the uMbumbulu Highway late on Monday when a silver car overtook him and stopped, blocking the road.

He claimed two men approached him with firearms, said police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane.

Metro police spokeswoman, Kelly Ann Snyman, said the man claimed hijackers bundled him into a silver car. The man claimed one of the hijackers drove his car behind the silver car to uMlazi D-section, where they dropped him off.

“He said he phoned a relative for help. The man’s brother and son searched for him and found him at the police station,” Snyman said.

“The metro police dog unit searched the area and were eventually guided by the car’s tracking device to U-section. The Aveo was found parked on the side of the road just after 5am yesterday.”

The fiance, who lives a few streets away from where the car was found locked, said neighbours told her the police had found the car.

She rushed to the station and was told by police the car had been reported hijacked.

She said she thought something had happened to her boyfriend and explained to police she had the keys to the car and it had not been hijacked.

Police arrested the man after his fiance had spoken to them and charged him with defeating the ends of justice.
