Durban - A man fell to his death from a cliff in Asherville while allegedly shooting at police.

The man was one of five occupants in a suspicious vehicle spotted by police on Friday.

Provincial police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the Sydenham Crime Prevention unit had been on patrol when they spotted the vehicle. The suspects had allegedly opened fire and police shot back in self defence.

“One suspect was shot in the foot and was arrested and was found in possession of an unlicensed handgun. Another suspect fell from the nearby cliff while shooting at the police.

“His body was later recovered… He had a gunshot wound on his abdomen,” Zwane said.

He said the remaining three suspects were also arrested when they tried to flee.

Two handguns and live ammunition was found in their possession.
