The marketing manager of a popular Pretoria nightclub is in ICU after being stabbed repeatedly by a patron.
Bleeding profusely and screaming in pain, Carel de Jager, 21, was rushed to hospital in the back of a bakkie with blood flowing from the back of his head and upper body.
According to a source, a fight broke out in the Tiger Tiger nightclub near Menlyn on Saturday. De Jager and bouncers tried to stop the fight. The club is a hot spot for students and young people and attracts large crowds on Thursday to Sunday nights.
“It’s all very sketchy what exactly the fight was about, but all of a sudden we saw a commotion and people rushing outside,” the source said. It is believed the fight continued out in the parking lot.
Another witness said that during De Jager’s attempt to break up the fight, one of the men involved in the brawl threw a bottle at him.
The bottle broke and the man then allegedly used it to stab De Jager. A knife was possibly also used.
“Everything was so confusing and happened so fast. People were in the parking lot and there was Carel bleeding. Someone grabbed him out of the commotion and rushed him to hospital in a bakkie,” the source said.
“Police arrived on the scene while the commotion was going on, so they managed to arrest the guy who stabbed Carel.”
It is understood that another man who had also apparently been stabbed was taken to hospital.
“It seems as if the initial fight that Carel was trying to break up was between the man who stabbed him and this other guy. That’s how this guy also got stabbed,” the source said.
The man, known only as Rene, was treated at hospital and discharged later that day.
On Monday, Kloof Hospital spokesman Johan Dednan said De Jager was in ICU. He had surgery earlier the day.
“He is in ICU in a stable condition. He has just come out of theatre and is still sedated. His family are here with him,” Dednan said.
“That’s all the information they have allowed me to give out at this stage.”
Attempts to get comment from the nightclub management proved futile, although a representative, Megan O’Mahoney, confirmed the incident.
Police said a 27-year-old man had been arrested and was expected to appear in court this week.
According to a police source, brawls at nightclubs are becoming an increasing problem.
This follows an incident at a Joburg nightclub, video footage of which went viral.
The footage shows two men allegedly doing drugs in the bathroom. A third man joins them.
Then another man, believed to be a bouncer, emerges from a cubicle and hits one of the men, who falls, hitting the back of his head on the basin and landing on the floor.
The man smacks the two other men before calling for assistance from a security guard.
