Johannesburg - A man has appeared in the Johannesburg Commercial Crimes Court in connection with the manufacturing and possession of counterfeit bank notes, police said on Tuesday.

John Rasefete appeared in court on Monday and was denied bail, national police spokesman Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale said.

He was expected to appear in court again on July 3.

Rasefete was arrested after a joint operation which led to the arrest of six people in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg.

“A tip-off (led police) to the said residence where they discovered that counterfeit US notes in 50 and 100 dollar denominations were being manufactured,” Makgale said.

“All the fake notes, amounting to approximately 90,000 US dollars, were subsequently seized.”

The case against the other five people arrested with Rasefete was withdrawn.

Rasefete is charged with contravening the Counterfeit Goods Act. Police were hoping to make more arrests. - Sapa
