Upington - A Northern Cape man has been sentenced to 28 years in jail by the Gariep Periodical Court in Upington for killing his mother and his grandmother's boyfriend, and assaulting his grandmother and uncle, police said on Wednesday.
In September, Wessel Kock went to his mother Agnes's house in Onseepkans and beat the 43-year-old with a tree branch while she was asleep, Lieutenant Sergio Kock said.
He also attacked his grandmother Katrina, 72, and her boyfriend Isak Brandt, 50, who were sleeping in another room.
“The accused's uncle, Gert Kock, tried to come to their assistance but he too was assaulted. The accused ran away but was arrested by the police the following day.”
Agnes and Isak died on the scene and the other two were taken to hospital and discharged the following day, Kock said.
The 25-year-old was sentenced on Tuesday to 14 and 10 years' jail respectively for the murders, and two years each for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
There is no relation between Lt Kock and the family.
