Bethlehem - A Free State man was jailed for 10 years on Thursday for killing his fiancee, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.

Spokesman Nathi Mncube said Isaac Mphuti was handed an additional one year imprisonment for theft by the Free State High Court.

The sentences would run concurrently.

Mphuti killed Refilwe Moloi after he caught her having sex with another man, Dingaan Mokoena, in a bush near Meintjievlei farm.

“He didn’t interrupt (them) ... but proceeded to where Mr Mokoena's official vehicle was parked,” Mncube said in a statement.

“He broke the window of the vehicle and stole two cellular phones and a camera.”

Upon hearing the window break, Mokoena went to investigate and spotted his mistress's fiancee who had been trying to hide.

“On realising that the accused had caught them red-handed, Mr Mokoena decided to confront him,” said Mncube.

Moloi ran back into the bush and she was followed by Mphuti.

“The accused attacked... Moloi with an unknown object and killed her. He hid her body and covered it with leaves,” Mncube said.

Mokoena and another man later returned to the bush to search for Moloi.

They found Mphuti in the bush. His clothes had blood stains on them.

“Mokoena recovered the stolen items from the accused and left the farm,” said Mncube.

“The accused later pointed out the body of the deceased to her family and the police.”

He claimed he had not intended to kill Moloi.

“He asserted that he hid her body at the instruction of Mr Mokoena who was pointing a firearm at him. However the court found his version not to be reasonably and possibly true,” said Mncube.

The NPA welcomed the judgement.
