Johannesburg - A man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a seven-year-old girl, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

Sabelo Sibiya, 35, was sentenced by the Empangeni Regional Court on Tuesday, said Captain Thulani Zwane.

Sibiya approached the girl while she was with other children at a sugarcane plantation in Dover, Empangeni.

Sibiya took the girl to the nearby veld and raped her.

“Other children who witnessed the incident reported the matter to her grandmother,” Zwane said.

Sibiya was arrested on July 10, 2012, the same day he raped the girl. - Sapa
