Johannesburg - A man was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment on Thursday for raping an 11-year-old boy in Meadowlands, Soweto, Gauteng police said.

The Protea Magistrate's Court found Tebogo Mbhele, 24, guilty of raping the boy in November 2011, Constable Sibusiso Chauke said.

He was arrested at Leeuwkop prison, where he was serving a robbery sentence, on August 20 last year.

The boy and his 12-year-old friend were walking in Diepkloof when Mbhele approached and demanded money.

He produced a knife when the boys could not give him any. He grabbed the 11-year-old, dragged him into a bush and raped him.

The friend ran away and returned with local residents, but Mbhele was able to get away.
