Cape Town - A man was sentenced to six months’ direct imprisonment – of which he will a serve a month – for stealing two blocks of cheese from a Pick n Pay shop at the V&A Waterfront.
Phillip Sias pleaded guilty in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday to stealing the two blocks of cheese valued at R103.17.
He told the court he was hungry and bought a loaf of bread but had nothing to put on the bread, so he stole the cheese. He was stopped by the shop’s security who found the cheese in his possession.
Prosecutor Rui Carvalho read out a list of several of Sias’s previous convictions including theft, possession of drugs and housebreaking between 2002 and 2013.
The court took into account that the Waterfront was a “soft target” for thieves, that the owners of the shops suffered losses and that Sias was found with two blocks of cheese valued at less than R200.
He will serve the rest of his sentence under correctional supervision.
