Durban - A “heartless” man who strangled and murdered his mother while she was asleep has been sent to prison for 30 years.
Sonwabile Zondi, 31, was sentenced earlier this week at the Ixopo Magistrate’s Court for the murder of his 60-year-old mother, as well as arson, at the Dumisa location in Umzimkhulu on November 28, 2012.
A 93-year-old grandmother managed to escape unharmed.
Zondi set the house alight while his mother’s body was inside and fled, police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said.
Umzimkhulu police tracked down and arrested Zondi the next month.
Commending them for their hard work in investigating the gruesome murder, KZN police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said they had “left no stone unturned in making sure that this heartless Sonwabile rots in jail”.
