Cape Town - In an apparent suicide, a 21-year-old male had shoppers in Claremont stunned when he jumped to his death from the mall’s parking area.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel André Traut confirmed the incident and said it was reported at about 5.30pm on Tuesday.

“He jumped from the top floor of the parking area, in an apparent suicide, and a death inquest docket has been opened and the matter will be investigated.”

Shocked jazz musician Melanie Scholtz posted on Twitter, “Someone just jumped to their death outside Cavendish Square. #beyond tragic.”

Another Twitter user, @BasedG, posted a picture of the body covered in a space blanket saying, “(sic) this the dude that jumped from parking level 2 in Cavendish.”

Emergency Medical Services spokesman Robert Daniels said police were on the scene until late.
