Johannesburg - A Johannesburg security guard was arrested for accidentally shooting dead a man when a gun in his bag discharged, police said on Monday.

The man, 45, was arrested at around 7pm on Sunday at Super Bets on the corner of Plein and King George streets, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said in a statement.

“The security guard informed the police that his firearm was inside the bag; he put the bag on top of the chair. According to him the bag fell down and the shot went off,” said Mbele.

The man, who was between the age of 25 and 30, was shot once in the upper body and was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

The security guard was apprehended and his firearm confiscated, Mbele said.

He would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon.
