Cape Town - A young taxi driver was shot and killed when a gunman fired a random shot over a fence while he was braaiing with friends in Delft.

Granville Boucher, 28, who died of a single bullet wound yesterday, was known to most of the residents in the Rosendal area.

The friends who were braaiing with Boucher at the time of the shooting say a hand came over the yard’s wall and fired at random.

“No one knows why, or even if, Granville was the target,” said Boucher’s friend, Candice Gilbert. She said no one else was injured.

Another friend, who identified himself only as Deon, said a group of about 20 were celebrating a 21st birthday at the time of the shooting.

“The way that gun just came over the wall and let off a shot was unexplainable. I don’t know what the shooter was thinking, but he could have killed or injured any one of the people there. It was completely random. Granville was shot in his side.”

Deon said the police arrived in good time but it was already too late.
