A 68-year-old man was stabbed to death during a robbery at his home in Booysens on Tuesday, Johannesburg police said.

Captain Bonginkosi Amos Msimango said the incident in which Frederick Johannes van der Merwe died took place on Mulder Street at 4.55am.

“It is alleged that three unknown men tampered with a burglar door and gained entrance into the house. The deceased's wife saw them while she was walking from the bedroom to the kitchen,” he said.

“She called her husband, who was in the bedroom reading a newspaper. As he approached the suspects in the sitting room, they attacked him and (he) was stabbed several times to the upper body and back.”

Msimango said Van der Merwe collapsed and died on the scene.

The men fled the scene with a bag containing knitting materials, he said.

Msimango said two men were being questioned in connection with the incident. - Sapa
