Johannesburg - A man was killed while trying to run away from an alleged robber in Parkdene, George, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.

Hannes Baartman, 46, was allegedly hit several times over his head with a panga on Monday around 8.40pm while walking on Ballot street, Captain Malcolm Pojie said.

Baartman had sustained serious head injuries during the attack and tried to flee.

“... but unfortunately, he headed straight into oncoming traffic. He was then hit and run over by a car. He died on the scene.”

Pojie said the attacker was arrested later that night.

The 27-year-old would appear in the George Magistrate's Court on charges of attempted murder, robbery and culpable homicide.
