Johannessburg - A Johannesburg man has been arrested for allegedly robbing a shop in the city's business district after a customer tailed his gang afterwards, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

Three men allegedly robbed the Vula Zonge shop at the corner of Bree and Loveday streets on Wednesday around 4pm, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said.

“They pretended to be customers, one of them pulled out a firearm and instructed every person to lie down.”

When the trio left the shop they were unaware that one of the customers was following them. The customer then spotted a police vehicle and alerted them about the three men, Mbele said.

One man was arrested, but his accomplices allegedly fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money and a firearm.

Mbele said the 22-year-old man would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon on a business robbery charge. - Sapa
