Man nabbed over AK47, 303 rifle

Pietermaritzburg - A man was arrested in Umsunduzi near Pietermaritzburg on Thursday after he was found in possession of high calibre firearms, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Colonel Jay Naicker said the commander of the Tactical Response Team in Pietermaritzburg, Lt-Col Mmeli Ngubane received information about a motor vehicle that raised suspicion.

“He immediately responded in his private motor vehicle as he was off duty. After spotting the suspicious motor vehicle he approached the vehicle which had six occupants.

“Five of the occupants immediately fled in nearby bushes. The police officer approached the vehicle and during a search of the vehicle he recovered an AK47 rifle with 25 rounds of ammunition as well as a 303 rifle with four rounds of ammunition.”

The driver of the car was arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The 39-year-old man was expected to appear at the Camperdown Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Five other men were still at large.
