North West - A North West man would spent eight years in jail for fraud, police said on Saturday.

He was sentenced by the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court on Friday to 10 years imprisonment, with two years suspended, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

He was arrested in January 2012 for defrauding De Beers Transport Service for nearly R4.8 million while he was employed as an auditor.

He stole cheques and wrote them out in his name, forged signatures and deposited the stolen money into his own bank account, Ngubane said.

He said 286 cases of fraud were opened against him. - Sapa
