Johannesburg - A 57-year-old man was given six life sentences by the Verulam Regional Court on Thursday for raping a 12-year-old girl, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Adyathma Adyathma Amithananda was found guilty on nine counts - six of rape, two of sexual assault and one of possession or creation of child pornography, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

Amithananda was sentenced to five years for each count of sexual assault and a further five for possession of child pornography. The sentences would run concurrently.

“SAPS (South African Police Service) management would like to convey their sincere appreciation for the sterling efforts and tireless work to bring evidence before the court to ensure the successful conviction,” Zwane said. - Sapa
