Pretoria - An alleged love triangle turned deadly on Friday when a woman’s boyfriend shot her dead on the Mabopane Highway, and injured her alleged lover, before turning the gun on himself.

The taxi driver from Soshanguve, believed to be in his thirties, chased after his girlfriend and her suspected lover and shot both on the Ruth First Street off-ramp, at about 6.30am on Friday.

Police believe the man, driving alone, spotted his girlfriend with another man in a car and followed them. A chase ensued and once he had stopped them on the off-ramp, the taxi driver confronted his partner and an argument ensued.

“He must have followed them from somewhere. Then a fight broke out and he pulled out a gun,” said police spokeswoman Captain Riana van Aarde.

He fired seven bullets, killing his girlfriend. Her suspected lover was shot in the upper body. The assailant then turned the gun on himself.

She could not release the names of those involved because their families had not yet been notified.

The injured man was taken to hospital, where he is believed to be in a stable condition.

It is believed he and the girlfriend worked at the State Information Technology Agency.

A case of murder and attempted murder was opened with the Soshanguve police.

Van Aarde said details surrounding the crime were sketchy.
