Potchefstroom - Ventersdorp police are investigating a case of murder and opened an inquest after a 45-year-old man shot his 40-year-old wife before turning the firearm on himself at Tshing near Ventersdorp, North West police said on Saturday.

According to available information, the couple had returned home from a local tavern at about 11pm on Friday when an argument broke out, Major Pelonomi Makau said.

“The husband then apparently shot his wife twice in the upper body and left hand, he then allegedly turned the gun on himself.”

Emergency services were called and the man was certified dead on the scene.

The wife was found alive and taken to hospital.

“Unfortunately she passed away on arrival,” Makau said.
