Johannesburg -

A man was killed and his wife robbed on Friday during a house robbery in Cullinan, east of Pretoria, Gauteng police said.

According to a witness, the couple heard noises at their Welgedacht home around 1.30am on Friday and went to investigate, Cullinan police spokesman Johannes Jaftha said.

“They were confronted by four robbers. The man was shot several times in the upper body.

“They then tied up his wife and demanded money, and wanted to leave the yard with the two vehicles in the yard.”

Jaftha said the robbers were disturbed by a phone call from a neighbour who heard the gunshots.

“They fled on foot with the wife's purse, cellphone, and jewellery.”

AfriForum earlier said it would submit a complaint to national police commissioner Riah Phiyega on Friday.

“We receive complaints about the Cullinan police station and the Bronkhorstspruit cluster's bad service on a weekly basis.

“It was even communicated to the community that police officers are too tired to drive patrols,” AfriForum head of community safety Ian Cameron said in a statement.

Jaftha said AfriForum's claims were false.

“No, that is a blatant lie. We do have the capacity.” - Sapa
