Cape Town - A popular Cape Flats nightclub was rocked by a shooting in the early hours of Monday morning that left one man dead.

Management of Club Galaxy in Rylands says the trouble began inside the club when an argument over a woman broke out, leading to the attack on the 33-year-old in the parking lot outside the club.

The Flats’ oldest club hosted an “Easter at the Galaxy Bottle Party Exclusive” event and the incident occurred just before 4am.

Manager Sidney Oliver explained: “Half an hour before closing, there was an incident or argument inside the venue, and to our knowledge it was about a woman."

“We immediately separated the two parties and our security took the one group outside the venue to defuse the situation."

“A few minutes later a shooting occurred outside of the venue."

“The police were on the scene and, together with our security, the crowd was dispersed immediately."

Oliver also denied claims that a bouncer was killed in the shooting.

“No staff were injured and the person who was shot outside the venue was fatally [wounded]."

“As a venue we, Club Galaxy, pride ourselves in safeguarding our patrons, and this was an unfortunate incident beyond our control.”

Earlier at 1am that day, two people were wounded in a shooting at the posh Café Caprice in Camps Bay.

Three suspects - from Mitchells Plain and aged between 25 and 33 - were arrested after that attack and are due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says no arrests have been made in the Galaxy case and the investigation continues.

“Circumstances surrounding a shooting incident [on] Monday at 4am in the parking area near a nightclub in Athlone whereby a 33-year-old man was fatally wounded are under investigation,” he says.

Anyone with any information of the Galaxy shooting is asked to contact Athlone SAPS on 021 697 9238 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
