Johannesburg - A man was shot dead during a protest in Meadowlands, Soweto, on Wednesday morning, Gauteng police said.

The man was shot in the early hours of the morning in Extension 11, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

On Tuesday, residents of a hostel embarked on a service delivery protest.

At about 1am, they apparently began looting foreign nationals' shops and during the looting a shooting occurred, said Makhubela.

It was not known who shot who because the protesters hurled stones at the police when they arrived.

“One of the police vehicles was damaged. We managed to keep order and escort foreigners out of the area with their goods.”

Makhubela said when police were leaving the area a protester was found dead in the street with a gun shot wound.

A case of murder and malicious damage to property was opened and no one was arrested, he said.

The area was calm after 9am on Wednesday but police were still monitoring the situation. - Sapa
