Cape Town - Brazen gunmen shot three men - one fatally - outside the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Witnesses said the men were leaving the court at lunchtime when a car pulled up in front of them and the shooters emerged.

They opened fire in front of people gathered on the corner of Myrtle Road and Jakkalsvlei Avenue.

“A 19-year-old male from Bonteheuwel was fatally shot and two other males were seriously wounded,” said police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk.

A witness said the trio had been led out of court and officials had then locked the gates behind them. When the shooting began they had nowhere to run. Police are on the lookout for a Toyota Quantum, the vehicle used by the gunmen.

The shooting followed calls by Justice and Constitutional Development spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga to bolster security at courts in the province.

This was after the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court was evacuated on Thursday after concern about a “smuggled-in gun”. However, it turned out to be a plastic bag filled with dagga.

“We have to beef up security at the courts. We are not oblivious to the challenges that seem to be becoming an everyday occurrence,” said Mhaga.

Elsies River community police forum chairman Faizal Abrahams said gangsters were becoming increasingly “arrogant”.

“Look at what they did - they started shooting with a police station just down the road.”

Abrahams said gang violence was escalating and on Monday’s incident was most likely a gang hit or a “revenge” killing.

“We are seeing this more and more.”

Police have asked anyone with information to phone the Bishop Lavis police station at 021 935 9869 or Crime Stop at 086 001 0111.
