Johannesburg - A suspected robber was shot and wounded during a botched cash heist at Shoprite in Zola, Soweto, on Monday morning, Gauteng police said.

The robber was allegedly waiting inside the store when G4 security guards arrived, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

“The man inside the shop was about to take the money away from the guards when one of them (a guard) shot him,” he said.

The robber was wounded in the neck.

“He dropped his gun after he was shot and ran off. He got into a getaway car with suspects inside, and it drove away.”

Makhubela said it appeared the robber was inside the shop alone and another robber was standing guard outside.

“None of the G4 security guards were injured and none of the money was taken,” he said.

Police were searching for the getaway car.
