Eastern Cape - A man has been shot and wounded, allegedly by a policeman, in East London, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said on Monday.

Spokesman Moses Dlamini said the man was shot in the stomach on Sunday.

He said the policeman had been chasing a man suspected of house-breaking.

“When he got close to the shacks, he was approached by four males, including the one that he was chasing. The group of males allegedly tried to overpower and disarm the policeman, managing to pull his bullet proof vest off.”

The policeman fired four shots and the men ran away. He reported the incident.

Later, police on a routine patrol saw an ambulance at a filling station and went to investigate.

“They allegedly found one of the suspects who had attacked the policeman. The suspect had sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach,” said Dlamini.

The man was taken to hospital. The police opened a case of assault and malicious damage to property against him.

Dlamini said Ipid was investigating the shootings. - Sapa
