Cape Town - Three people, including a customer, were stabbed by a man with a pair of scissors at a Pick n Pay store in Boston, Bellville, on Monday in what the retail chain described as an “unprovoked attack”.

The 45-year-old assailant was arrested by a security guard soon after attacking a customer, a bakery assistant and a merchandiser inside the supermarket.

The incident comes just a day after a group of between seven and nine men robbed a jewellery store in Blue Route Mall in Tokai. In that case, the suspects smashed display cabinets with hammers, and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and jewellery.

Pick n Pay spokeswoman Tamra Veley said on Monday the retailer was “deeply distressed” about the incident and was in contact with the victims’ families.

“A man entered the store and proceeded to stab the three people with a pair of scissors he had brought into the store, injuring all three. The three injured people have been taken to hospital and are undergoing treatment.”

Veley said the store closed for the police to conduct their investigation.

“We are deeply distressed at this incident, which was an unprovoked attack on three innocent people in our store. We are giving the SAPS every support. We are in contact with the families and will stay in touch with them while they undergo treatment,” said Veley.

Police spokesman FC van Wyk confirmed the incident and said police were investigating a charge of attempted murder.
