Johannesburg - A 28-year-old man was arrested on Thursday for stabbing his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach in Mdantsane, near East London, Eastern Cape police said.

Lieutenant Nkosikho Mzuku said the man stabbed his 25-year-old girlfriend after a lengthy argument.

As a result, the baby was born prematurely at an East London hospital.

“The baby sustained stab wounds in the body, whilst she was still inside her mother during the incident,” he said.

“The baby and the mother are in a critical, but stable condition in hospital.”

Mzuku said the man was arrested and charged with attempted murder. He would appear in the Mdantsane Magistrate's Court on Monday. - Sapa
