Cape Town - A 25-year-old man who was stoned to death in Khayelitsha on Sunday has been identifed.

Zola Sydney Makubalo was identifed by his mother, according to police. She had last seen him alive the previous evening.

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said the SAPS found Makubalo’s body in BS Section, Enkanini.

“He was lying on his back and it is believed that he was stoned to death as two cement bricks were found next to him. The deceased sustained injuries to the head,” Van Wyk said.

No arrests have been made.

Van Wyk said anyone with information should call the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Sadick Benjamin, at 021 363 9050 during office hours.

The killing brings to 17 the number of crime suspects killed in street justice attacks in Khayelitsha in the past year.

The attacks prompted Premier Helen Zille to establish a commission of inquiry into an alleged breakdown in relations between the community and police at the Site B, Harare and Lingelethu West police stations.

Zille was handed a dossier detailing instances in which police had allegedly failed in their duty.
