A hostage drama in Evaton, Gauteng is unfolding on Friday after a 30-year-old man took his girlfriend captive in a stand-off with police.

Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale said the incident began shortly after 8am when the man began arguing with his girlfriend and her brother.

The 30-year-old man allegedly shot the brother in the foot then escaped in a car, taking with him the girlfriend.

Realising the police were giving chase, the man drove his car into a yard, Mogale said.

She said police negotiators are on the scene and are attempting to diffuse the situation.

It is not yet known what the initial argument was about. – Sapa
