North West - A 26-year-old man was expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate's Court for armed robbery and attempted murder on Monday, North West police said.

He was arrested on Sunday together with his friend who was shot in the back by police when he allegedly tried to ran away when he was arrested. They were both believed to be Zimbabweans.

The pair allegedly robbed, shot and wounded a 16-year-old teenager on December 31. It was believed that he was paralysed, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

The youth was with his three friends when they were attacked by three men. They took a cellphone and a handbag.

The police managed to track down the person who bought the cellphone in the area on Saturday.

“The buyer referred police to the suspect. Police went to the suspect's home on Sunday morning,” he said.

He was arrested at his house and took the police to his accomplice, who resisted arrest by assaulting a policeman with a stone. The accomplice tried to run away but was shot.

“He ran away but he was shot at the back and then arrested,” said Ngubane.

He was taken to hospital under police guard. - Sapa
