Johannesburg - A rape victim’s son is set to appear in court for torching the house of the man alleged to have attacked his 68-year-old mother, police said on Monday.

Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said a the 28-year old man was arrested on Friday night after his mother was raped at her home in the Snathing area near the Edendale township, west of Pietermaritzburg.

The rape suspect was also arrested.

“On Friday October 9, 2015 at about 4pm the victim was sleeping at her house in the Snathing area outside Pietermaritzburg when the suspect entered the house,” said Zwane.

“It is alleged that the suspect raped the pensioner and also assaulted her. The suspect fled the scene after the incident. When the son of the rape victim heard about the incident, he went to look for the suspect who allegedly raped his mother,” Zwane said.

He said the son arrived at the suspect’s house, also in the Snathing area, but the suspect was not at home. The son then allegedly set the suspect’s house alight.

A case of arson was opened at Plessislaer police station for further investigation and the son was arrested by the Plessislaer Family Violence, Child and Sexual Offences Unit for arson.

“Plessislaer FCS members took over the rape docket and started to look for alleged rape suspect. In the early hours of Sunday the suspect was traced to New Hanover area where he was hiding and was arrested,” Zwane said.

The man was charged with rape and is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
