Port Elizabeth - Police in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape have arrested a man on a charge of corruption after he allegedly tried to buy a case docket which had implicated him in an earlier burglary case.
Provincial police said in a statement that members from Crime Intelligence and Detectives from Uitenhage arrested the 33-year-old following a comprehensive investigation.
“It is alleged that the man, who is also a suspect in a burglary case which occurred in Uitenhage in December 2014, attempted to purchase the case docket that implicates him to the crime,” police spokesperson Gerda Swart said. “The suspect made an appointment with the investigating officer at a shopping complex in Uitenhage for the transaction to take place. The suspect allegedly offered the officer a substantial amount of money for the docket to disappear.”
The man was immediately arrested and will appear in the Uitenhage Magistrates Court on Thursday on a charge of corruption.
“This arrest should serve as a deterrent to the members of the public, that corruption is not an option and police will stop at nothing to root out corrupt activities in the Uitenhage policing area,” said the Station Commander at the Uitenhage police station, Brigadier Leonie Bentley.
