Pretoria - A man who raped his stepdaughter from an early age - usually on Saturday nights and Sunday mornings while his wife was in church - and impregnated her when she was 14, deserved the life imprisonment sentence he was given.

This was according to two judges of the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, who turned down his appeal against what he deemed a harsh sentence.

Judge Hans Fabricius said there was nothing to be said in favour of the man (he cannot be identified to protect the victim) - who has four children.

At first the man, 55, vehemently denied that he had raped his stepdaughter or that he was the father of her child but DNA tests confirmed his paternity.

The victim told a heart-rending story.

She said her father touched her indecently from the age of three and raped her from the age of 10.

He blamed a boy at her school for impregnating her.

The teen said he kept on raping her even when she was pregnant.

She said she never reported the rapes, as he had threatened to kick her out and she feared that she had nowhere to go.

The teenager eventually reported the matter to her aunt who insisted they go to the police.
