Johannesburg - The public should be aware of a scam using the Houghton address of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund (NMCF) warned on Thursday.

The scam was circulating on the internet and via e-mail calling for donations to “Poverty Alleviation World Wide”, spokesman Oupa Ngwenya said in a statement

“The telephone numbers reflected on the purported letterhead, bearing late former President Nelson Mandela's picture along with the Nelson Mandela Day logo, are not those of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.”

The scam made claims to do with former president Nelson Mandela's will and fraudulently used names of NMCF officials.

“All of this is false, fraudulent and criminal,” Ngwenya said.

“Not only does the scam abuse the image of our late founder, Nelson Mandela, and logo of Nelson Mandela Day, but also peppers its nefarious undertaking with the persons and names of NMCF CEO Sibongile Mkhabela, communications manager Bridget Masango, and myself as directors of the fund distribution committee.”

Ngwenya urged the public not to be tricked into giving money to the scam.
