The driver of the car in which former president Nelson Mandela's great granddaughter Zenani died will stand trial in September.

Sizwe Mankazana appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Regional Court on Thursday when the case was set down for trial on September 5.

He originally faced a charge of drunken driving and culpable homicide, but the culpable homicide charge has since been converted to murder.

Zenani Zanethemba Nomasonto Mandela died in a car accident two days after her 13th birthday.

She was being driven home from a Soccer World Cup concert at the Orlando Stadium on June 11 last year.

Mankazana, 23, is the son of Zwelakhe Mankazana, who is the partner of Mandela's daughter Zenani Mandela-Dlamini. He is studying international relations at a university in the United States.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela attended the court proceedings on Thursday. She left soon after the case was postponed. - Sapa
