Welkom - An extensive manhunt was launched after a man was shot and wounded in the head in Welkom on Monday, Free State police said.

Captain Stephen Thakeng said Chinese national Muzi Gao, 50, was at work at his business at DH Basaar when an unknown suspect entered the premises and shot Gao, who was standing on a ladder.

“He was hit by a bullet in his face and (another bullet) hit the wall.”

The suspect fled the scene.

Police were using closed circuit television footage as part of their investigation.

“We don't know what the motive is yet. Nothing was stolen,” Thakeng said.

Gao was in a serious condition in hospital.
