Cape Town - There was a heavy police presence in the gang hotspot of Manenberg in Cape Town on Thursday ahead of the arrival of Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa.
Mthethwa and fellow ministers in the justice, crime prevention and security (JCPS) cluster are visiting several areas on the Cape Flats to assess election readiness.
The visit is aimed at ensuring there was “stability ahead of the elections”, a media alert said.
Mthethwa was expected in Manenberg by 11.30am, but by 1pm he had still not arrived.
Police patrols have increased markedly ahead of the visit.
Members of the police tactical response team and flying squad were seen driving past the community centre where Mthethwa is expected to address residents.
Mounted police officers were also visible earlier, a sight residents do not often see in Manenberg.
