Port Elizabeth - Seven men accused of being part of a robbing and hijacking syndicate were arrested in Mdantsane on Monday, said Eastern Cape police.

They were charged with armed robbery, hijacking, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, Lt Nkosikho Mzuku said.

The men allegedly robbed a group of pupils at gunpoint last Friday.

“They took their cellphones. A few minutes later, they allegedly went on to shoot a 34-year-old Zimbabwean and also took his cellphone.”

They then allegedly hijacked a vehicle belonging to a Somalian shop owner. It was found abandoned several kilometres from the hijacking scene on Friday. The culprits were traced and found in possession of a 9mm firearm and live ammunition.

“The cellphones were already sold (but) police recovered some (of them) in the Duncan village area,” said Mzuku.

The seven, aged between 20 and 25, would appear in the Mdantsane Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. - Sapa
