Cape Town - Western Cape community safety MEC Dan Plato on Friday condemned the killing of a police constable in a shoot-out with robbers in Kraaifontein.

“I condemn this heinous act and would like to send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Constable Koopman and to all the police officers in this province,” Plato said in a statement.

“We value the work that you do and understand that every day that you serve the people of this province you are putting your life on the line to protect others.”

Constable Rozelle Koopman, 30, died after being shot in the head during a shoot-out with robbers on Thursday.

She and her colleagues had responded to an alert about a robbery on a farm near Kraaifontein.

Police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk said two people were seen running away near the scene.

One of them started firing randomly when police confronted them in Old Paarl Road.

“Police returned fire, wounding both suspects. One of the suspects sustained four gunshot wounds to his legs and shoulder and was taken to hospital and remains under police guard,” Van Wyk said.

Koopman was shot and died on the scene.

The other man was shot in his stomach, but escaped.
