Durban - KwaZulu-Natal transport MEC Willies Mchunu welcomed a court's ruling on Tuesday denying bail to the truck driver accused of killing 24 people in Pinetown.
Mchunu said this case should set an example to people who defied traffic laws.
“Harsher sentences will rid our society of the undesirable sense of impunity among errant road users,” he said in a statement.
The Pinetown Magistrate's Court earlier denied Sanele Goodness May bail.
The Swazi citizen was driving the truck that ploughed into four minibus taxis and two cars at an intersection at the bottom of Fields Hill on the M13 in Pinetown on September 5.
Twenty-two people died on the scene. Two died of their injuries later.
May faces 24 murder charges.
