Kimberley - The police are investigating two cases of attempted murder, after two friends were allegedly assaulted, stabbed, robbed and run over by a vehicle in Kimberley at the weekend.

Both men sustained serious injuries and had to undergo surgery for facial, head and leg injuries.

No arrests have been made yet.

A cousin of Marcellus Beyers, one of the victims, said that doctors took six hours in theatre to reconstruct his face on Wednesday.

“He cannot speak and all the bones in his face, up to his chin, were crushed. He sustained head and facial injuries. It appears as if the person who drove over him was intent on causing serious harm because he drove over him from behind and then returned to bump him for a second time. They also pelted him with bricks and stones and he lost a tremendous amount of blood.”

She said that Beyers and his friend Vincent Rosen were at home when they were called out to the scene outside Kim-by-Nite on August 22 between 1am and 2am.

“A fight was taking place and someone called them to assist a boy who was being kicked and assaulted while he was lying lifeless on the ground. They went on foot to the nightclub.

“The driver of the car drove into Beyers and Rosen and also threw bottles and stones at them. Beyers managed to run in the direction of the Netcare 911 offices and then tried to make his way home. I called the ambulance and he collapsed when he was in hospital.”

Rosen was discharged from hospital on Wednesday, after undergoing surgery for a broken leg and ankle.

“I was stabbed three times in the face and head and my clothes were torn. I was also robbed of my cellphone and wallet,” Rosen said.

He indicated that the driver of the car bumped his leg, after which he collapsed to the ground.

“Beyers and I arrived on the scene to see what the commotion was all about. I was standing on the pavement when the vehicle drove into me.”

He was unaware of the reason for the attack.

“There was a mob of people who attacked us.”

Police spokeswoman, Lieutenant Andrea Cloete, said the alleged incident was believed to have taken place after an argument broke out between the complainants and the alleged suspects.

“The motive for the attacks are yet to be determined. The Kimberley Police are investigating two counts of attempted murder. The case is under investigation and no arrests have been made as yet. The victims sustained serious injuries.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident is requested to contact the Kimberley Police on 053 838 4328 or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or SMS to 32211.
