Bloemfontein -

Two men will appear in the Kroonstad Magistrate’s Court on Friday in connection with the murder of a Free State policeman in Maokeng.

Police spokesman Captain Stephen Thakeng said Warrant Officer Thomas Mngomezulu, 49, of the Phuthaditjhaba flying squad, was found dead in the veld in Maokeng on December 23 last year.

He said the police officer's private vehicle was found abandoned while his official firearm, cellphone and wallet were missing.

Thakeng said police made a breakthrough in the case in February this year and a man was arrested in Maokeng.

A second man, allegedly found in the possession of the officer’s cellphone, was arrested while in police custody in relation to recent ATM bombings in Bloemfontein.

Two other men were arrested after police followed up information about the officer’s firearm.

The four men appeared in the Kroonstad Magistrate's Court earlier and the case was postponed for bail applications to Friday, February 22.

Thakeng said Jack Smous, 34, and David Twapa, 29, face murder charges.

Jorobana Goodwill Molise, 28, and Motsamai Motsoane, 31, face charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
