Two men have appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court for failing to destroy leftover explosives after doing blasting work, police said on Monday.

Sergeant Fikiswa Matoti said Alen Smith, 36, and Johannes van der Merwe, 24, two employees of a private explosive company, were charged with the illegal possession, transportation and storage of explosives.

The case against them was postponed until Tuesday in the same court.

The men were arrested when the explosives were found in their possession on Thursday. Police said they received a tip-off from a member of the public.

Matoti said it was required by law to destroy remaining explosives after every legal explosion exercise, but that the men had failed to abide by the rule.

Police had sent the confiscated explosives to the forensic unit to compare them with the ones used at a recent blasting site. - Sapa
