Cape Town - The City of Cape Town announced on Monday that its ghost squad had arrested a Metro Police officer over the weekend for illegal drag racing.

“‘It is really disappointing to discover that one of our own was involved in this type of activity,” said JP Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.

The arrest of the police officer occurred on Sunday during operations in Sea Point, Bellville, and Paarden Eiland.

The officer was set to appear in court soon.

“The law must take its course because we will not tolerate this type of behaviour from our staff who are meant to be the custodians of law and order,” said Smith.

The officer was one of ten suspects arrested for reckless and negligent driving over the weekend. A further seven were arrested for drunk driving, while one suspect was arrested for producing a false driving licence and 164 fine were issued for various offences.

City traffic services were also confronted with an angry Ferrari driver who threatened to upload images of attending officers after he was pulled over for not having a front number plate.

“The arrogance of the motorist clearly displays a lack of respect for the law,” said Smith.
