Johannesburg -

A Johannesburg metro police officer was shot and wounded by robbers on the N12 highway on Wednesday, a spokesman said.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said he was wounded in the right shoulder and neck.

He said two officers tried to stop a blue station wagon for reckless driving on the N12 west, before the Soweto offramp around noon.

“The suspects from the station wagon got out and shot at the officers, who reversed and took cover.”

Minnaar said the men in the vehicle - it was not known how many - were armed with R5 rifles, AK-47 assault rifles and 9mm pistols. Cartridges were later found on the scene.

He said the men had robbed a PicknPay in Steeledale, in southern Johannesburg, just minutes before the shooting.

No arrests had been made and police were searching for the station wagon. - Sapa
