Johannesburg - Four miners have been assaulted after they allegedly reported for duty at Waterval Smelter, a division of Anglo Platinum (Amplats) mine in Rustenburg, North West police said on Saturday.

Brigadier Thulane Ngubane said two men and two women, were taken forcefully into a bakkie to Zakhele Informal Settlement on Friday.

On arrival they were attacked with stones, rocks, fists and knobkerries by a group of about 1000 people.

Ngubane said they were accused of reporting for duty when other mine workers are on strike.

“It is suspected that the victims have been targeted for a long time.”

He said they were taken to a local hospital under critical conditions. One of the victims was in the intensive care unit.

No arrests have been made, but police were investigating a case of attempted murder. - Sapa
