Johannesburg - The transport ministry on Friday condemned recent taxi violence in Johannesburg and Roodepoort which has claimed four lives.

“The Minister of Transport, Honourable Dipuo Peters, strongly condemns acts of violence and intimidation taking place in the Johannesburg taxi industry,” her spokesman Ishmael Mnisi said in a statement.

The violence had affected the Faraday, Bree and Noord streets, Randburg and Hyde Park routes.

Four deaths as a result of the violence had been reported to the department between Wednesday and Thursday.

“Minister Peters calls upon the affected taxi associations to work together towards a speedy, amicable and endurable solution to this debacle.”

Permits issued to legal taxi drivers clearly stipulated the routes the taxis were allowed to use. Peters urged drivers to comply with the law.

She called on law enforcement agencies to ensure the perpetrators of the violence were caught.
